The Church of England should make a lead into saving energy and fossil fuels.
All Church’s in U.K. have been built so that they have a South facing Roof.
I propose that they all have photo voltaic Solar Panels or tiles put on to cover the maximum are that is viable. All the surplus energy to be sold to the Grid the church can also claim ROC certificates that can be sold to electricity generating companies.
The result of this action will save the country huge amounts of energy and reduce the need for burning fissile fuels.
I do not know if churches in other countries in particular the common wealth also have south facing roofs, but if they do there is a very good case for them to install the same solar panels.
The amount of solar panels and orders to do this project will mean that the church will have a strong purchasing power to buy at very good prices and many people will be employed, at a time when work is desperately needed.

For those who believe that C02 is dangerous, there is the added benefit that no Co2 emissions will be incurred.

The church will get its money back in only a few years so what is preventing it happening?

Don’t tell me they look bad, they do not look much different to an ordinary roof but if you are going to be picky then install solar tiles you could not tell the difference from ordinary tiles.

Solar Panels

Solar Panels You may recall cost £25,000 for 40 photovoltaic Panels (50% Grant equals £12,500)1st year produced 5000kwatts we consumed 5600 kwatts home and Re-charging Van. Since we started, the rules of the Npower Juice scheme have changed.Initially we were getting 5p per unit produced, whether we used it or not. In April 2006 Npower Juice said for the energy we put into the grid, we would get the secondary rate that we would normally pay for electricity. The first 182Kwh are at 13.68p the secondary rate on all over was 10.11p, We get back 10.11p per Kwatt of energy we put into the grid. This way we use all the energy we produce even if we use it at night!Problem is Npower need to install an export meter and until they do they intend estimating the amount. (I suspect in their favour). Never the less our electric bill is very smallIncreased cost of energy & electricity, has reduced the payback period considerably, I suspect that as prices are inevitably going to increase immensely, we may get our money back within 7 to 8 years? Our house is worth more because of reduced costs. A couple of things to note. The roof of our house is quite steep the result is that the amount generated when the sun is at its highest is not the best production figure. The best rates (5 Kwh) are achieved in spring and autumn when the sun is at the ultimate angle to the roof and solar panels. The performance has not declined over time so the self-cleaning glass must work. Any Questions ask me david@salesprint.co.uk David Webb

Electric Van

The sequel to the Electric Van & Solar panels.

The first year I have driven the Van. 4th October 2005 until 3rd October 2006

In that time we have driven 1790 Miles

Recovered equivalent petrol cost of £270 (Over half the cost of the batteries)

Re-charged over 100 times. (Mostly just top ups)

The average distance travelled 13.2 miles per charge.

Furthest distance on one charge travelled 37 mile.

Not a bad record?

Bear in mind there is a 12% (1 in 8) hill on the return journey to our house

“SOLAR ELECTRIC POWERED” is signed all over it, which attracts a lot of attention

We used the van at a car boot sale. My wife was asked how fast does it go?
She answered. “Very fast down hill a bit slow up hill.”

One guy came over to me and said, “I bet you wish it was!” When I showed him under the bonnet and a photo of the solar panels on the roof of our house. He was surprised,

I was pulled over by a police patrol car. The officer said, “ Please can I have a look?”

Driving an electric vehicle is an interesting learning curve

The tyre pressure at 35 psi helps a great deal.
Start off in second or third if flat. Change up as the amps go over 100, unless there is an incline imminent. We travel most of the time at 33mph using 52amps 60volts.
Conserve energy as much as possible. Pre-empt the stoplight, halt sign etc.
When I perceive an incline the amps go up to 100 plus.
At the sight of a hill, get as much speed as possible Max about 45mph. Change down at 100 amps only let it go below that if the top of the hill is imminent.
Down Hill, Zero Amps & Coast.
All this sounds great and simple but putting it into practice needs concentration.
My wife and friends say I’m a reckless driver as I tend to go round bends flat out and will not give up any inertia without some good reason.
The brakes take some stick too, down hill at 60mpg plus.
Since I have driven the van, the LPG consumption in my Lexus has gone up.

I think it is brilliant!
So much so I have installed the top of the range Sony DAB Radio.
We can listen to Classic FM and MP3s in silence as we travel

Times have Changed

Long, Long ago. In 1954 I worked for Birmingham City Council
Refuse Department in Rotten Park Street, Edgbaston
.

I had to weigh ever refuse vehicle as it came in with its load three times a day the Dustmen got a bonus based on the amount collected.
They would collect anything. I first came aware of pornography as magazines were thrust in front of me by some of the men as a reward for weighing them high, despite my dedicated accuracy, I had a live grenade handed to me, to show their anger,
Still I digress.
The real purpose of this bog is to show you how times have changed.
The refuse was tipped into a large brick built pit, with a conveyor belt as its bottom. The refuse was transported by the conveyor under a very big and powerful magnet, This drew off and separated the steel and magnetic items.
Men and women stood each side of the belt carrying the remaining refuse, they sorted individual tasks be it Alloy, Rags, Paper, Cloth etc.
The remainder went on into a furnace.
The heat from the furnace powered a generator that charged the lorries.
Ho, I forgot to mention the lorries were electric.
I also weighed the clinker & ash, which was sold for to Road surfacing companys.
Of course the steel Alloy, Cloth etc was sold.

The electrical engineers would repair items, which the men would buy on the QT.

So what happened the Council decided that all the lorries should be diesel or petrol.

The same council did away with trams that ran 90% on the central verge of the dual carriageway from Rubery and Rednal. Replaced by Buses.

This is the council which had the foresight in 1860 to realise that Birmingham would need a lot of water. They bought land in Wales and built dams to bring enough water to the city. 99 Miles and the fall is reputed to be only 1ft.

The government decreed that water should be publicly owned and took the ownership off Birmingham City. Perhaps they learnt then, that there was no point in being thoughtful or consider the future.

Future Energy

Steps to resolve the energy requirements of the future.

Double, treble, or even quadruple, Tax on energy
This will reduce waste, encourage insulation conserve what we have don’t waste it.

Build the Severn Barrage / Lagoon and several other potential places.
This can be done in a few years at no cost to the country we have all the resources
It will produce clean energy equal to many nuclear power stations

Install Photo Voltaic Solar panels on all South facing roofs/walls.
You will be amazed how much electricity you get more then twice that you use.

Install windmills to supply housing associations direct say 100 houses per generator.
Big Power windmills are efficient & welcome if fed directly into the houses around them

Companies & large energy users should install Photo Voltaic Solar panels
Store energy in Grid in dayWork at night when there is spare capacity.
Large amounts of energy are wasted at night, just because its not used.
Generators cannot be switched off and on just like that.

Install Hydro generators at every possible point down every river.
The power generated to go into the nearest conurbation.

In Canada it is common to see Hydropower units at every convenient point a river flows.
The power is generated next to the community that needs it this makes it efficient and available.

Build coal-burning generators with cleaning systems put co2 back into the mine.
There is a huge coal resource in UK if we take Coal out of the mines.
Generate and clean the output waste put the co2 back into the old mines.
We end up with clean energy.

Don’t rely on Gas from Russia or anywhere else outside UK.
We already rely on Gas from Russia! We need to control our energy.

Don’t build Nuclear generators.
Not until we can use fusion or know how to dispose radiated waste.

IF GLOBAL WARMING IS MAN MADE, IT’S TOO LATE!
THERE IS NO WAY MAN KIND CAN REVERSE MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING

IF C02 IS THE COURSE OF GLOBAL WARMING, ITS ARMAGEDEN HERE WE COME!
IN WHICH CASE WE MAY AS WELL RIDE TO HELL WITH NUCLIER UNTIL THE END.
SAY 35 YEARS AT CURRENT RATE OF INCREASE?

WE MUST SAVE ENERGY TO CONSERVE THE LOW RESERVES OF OIL
That’s why we need to recycle waste

We may disagree but we must both defend the right to say so!
